US Navy battleships pictured off Battleships off Leyte, 20-24 October 1944. They are, left to right, USS Mississippi, USS West Virginia, and USS Maryland. The duel of the battleships in the Surigao Strait lasted just ten minutes, with Mississippi firing the last salvo. This was the last salvo ever fired by a battleship against another battleship in history. Shells smashed into Yamashiro and Mogami. A torpedo from the destroyer USS Bennion finished off Yamashiro.
